Standby letter of credit (SBLC)

A standby letter of credit is a bank's undertaking to pay a beneficiary if the applicant fails to perform an obligation, such as paying for goods or repaying a loan, on presentation of a demand and any stated documents. It works like a demand guarantee, is common in US practice and is usually subject to the ICC rules ISP98 or UCP 600.
