Card authorisation, clearing and settlement

A card payment runs in three steps: in authorisation, the issuer approves or declines the transaction in real time and reserves the funds; in clearing, the acquirer sends the final transaction details through the scheme; in settlement, funds move from issuer to acquirer, net of interchange, and then on to the merchant.
