Full profileYour role
A Fraud Analyst detects, investigates and prevents fraud against a financial firm and its customers. The role reviews alerts from fraud detection systems on card payments, online banking, instant transfers and loan applications, contacts customers to confirm transactions, blocks accounts or payments where needed, and investigates cases such as account takeover, authorised push payment scams and identity fraud. Fraud analysts work in banks, payment firms and card issuers, often alongside anti-money laundering teams.
The analyst starts on the real-time fraud queue, where the detection system holds payments that look unusual. The first case is a large instant transfer from an elderly customer to a new beneficiary abroad. The analyst checks the device, login location and recent changes to the account, then calls the customer, who describes a caller claiming to be from the bank. The analyst stops the payment, secures the account and records the case as a scam attempt. Later cases include card transactions in two countries within an hour and a loan application with documents that do not match public records. After lunch the analyst works on investigations: tracing funds from a confirmed account takeover and requesting a recall from the receiving bank. Mid-afternoon the analyst reviews which rules produced many false alerts this week and shares examples with the fraud strategy team. The day ends with completing case notes, flagging a new scam pattern and handing open cases to the evening shift.

Fraudsters also use generative AI for deepfakes, synthetic identities and convincing scam messages, which makes cases harder. The European Banking Authority reports AI use in EU banks for fraud detection with governance expectations. Value grows in investigating new scam patterns, talking to vulnerable customers, judging edge cases and feeding findings back into detection rules.
