Also known as Pricing & Reference Data Analyst · Reference Data Analyst · Security Master Analyst · Static Data Analyst
A reference and security master data analyst creates and maintains the static data that every trade, price and report depends on: instrument identifiers such as ISIN (International Securities Identification Number), issuer and counterparty records, classifications, calendars and pricing sources. The role sits in asset managers, banks, custodians and data providers. It sets up new securities, keeps vendor feeds consistent, applies corporate action changes and resolves data quality exceptions before they cause failed trades or wrong reports.
The morning begins with exception queues from overnight vendor feeds. The analyst compares fields that disagree between data vendors, such as a coupon date, a country of risk or a maturity, and decides which value is correct using prospectuses and exchange notices. New instrument requests arrive from traders and portfolio managers who want to buy a security that is not yet in the master file; each is set up, checked by a second person and released. Corporate actions such as mergers, name changes and redemptions change identifiers and must be applied on the right date. Late morning there is often a call with operations teams about a failed trade caused by a missing settlement detail. The afternoon goes to data quality metrics, stale prices, legal entity identifier checks and requests from regulatory reporting teams. The analyst also documents rules so that the same exception is handled the same way every time.

Reference data is one of the first areas where rules engines and machine learning are applied: automated vendor comparison, anomaly detection on prices and fields, and generative AI that extracts terms from prospectuses.
Reference data is one of the first areas where rules engines and machine learning are applied: automated vendor comparison, anomaly detection on prices and fields, and generative AI that extracts terms from prospectuses. The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects routine data entry work to decline. What gains value is deciding the golden source, writing and testing data rules, checking what the model extracted, and working with users to fix root causes. Analysts who learn SQL, data governance and vendor management move into data quality and data owner roles.
