Loan-to-value ratio (LTV)

Loan-to-value is the loan amount divided by the value of the collateral, usually property. A higher LTV means a thinner equity cushion and higher expected loss. Lenders set maximum LTVs, and some national authorities set LTV limits as macroprudential measures.
