What the role does

A payments messaging specialist runs and controls the flow of financial messages between a bank and its counterparts over the Swift network and market infrastructures. The role monitors message queues, repairs and routes MT and ISO 20022 MX messages, handles exceptions with correspondent banks, maintains reference data such as BIC codes and relationship management authorisations, supports sanctions screening of messages and contributes to migrations and controls such as the Swift Customer Security Programme.

A day in the life

The specialist starts by checking the overnight message traffic: queues are clear except for a batch of payment messages rejected by a market infrastructure for a format error. The cause is a missing structured address field in the ISO 20022 message, so the specialist corrects the mapping rule with the payments team and resubmits. Mid-morning goes to correspondent banking queries: a counterpart bank asks about a payment that arrived with truncated remittance information after translation between message formats. The specialist traces the message, explains the cause and agrees a fix. Next comes reference data: a new correspondent relationship needs authorisations exchanged, and an expired BIC must be replaced in routing tables. After lunch the specialist reviews messages held by sanctions screening and supports the investigations team with message details. Late afternoon the work turns to the annual attestation under the Swift Customer Security Programme, collecting evidence on access controls. The day ends with an incident report for a short connectivity outage.

Read the full assessment

Message repair, routing and format translation are increasingly automated, and the richer data of ISO 20022 lets tools validate messages and predict rejects before sending. Manual repair work is shrinking. Value grows in understanding standards and mapping rules, handling complex exceptions with correspondents, and running security and resilience controls, since payment fraud and cyber attacks on messaging remain a priority for regulators under DORA. The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists technological literacy and cybersecurity among the skills growing fastest.
