What the role does

A loan operations analyst handles the processing that follows a credit decision: booking and setting up loans, drawdowns and repayments, interest and fee calculations, rate resets, amendments and payoffs. The role sits in banks, specialist lenders and loan agency or servicing firms, for retail, corporate or syndicated lending. It checks documentation and conditions before funds are released, reconciles loan accounts and cash, and keeps records accurate for finance, risk and the borrower.

A day in the life

The analyst opens the day with the queue of drawdown requests and repayments due. For each drawdown, conditions precedent are checked against the facility agreement and the credit approval, the loan is booked in the system and the payment is released after a second check. Next are interest and fee calculations for loans that reset or roll over today, and notices sent to borrowers or syndicate lenders. Mid-morning brings questions from relationship managers about a client's balance or a delayed payment. The afternoon includes amendments such as extensions, rate changes and covenant waivers, plus reconciliation of loan balances against the general ledger and cash accounts. Unapplied cash and payment breaks are investigated with payments colleagues. The analyst also prepares data for credit risk reporting and helps with audit samples. Before closing, open items are logged and anything that could delay a funding is escalated.

Document extraction, workflow tools and rules engines increasingly automate data capture from facility agreements, drawdown checks and standard calculations. The European Banking Authority reports wide use of AI in EU banks, including in credit processes, with governance expectations rising. The World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025 expects routine clerical work to decline. What gains value is reviewing exceptions, understanding complex agreements, managing restructurings and explaining issues to clients and credit teams.
